Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, has helped raise more than £100m for school sports since the launch of its Active Kids scheme in 2005.

The sum represents the largest ever donation by a retailer to school and youth groups.

“We’re incredibly proud of what we have achieved with the help of our customers and colleagues over the past six years,” said chief executive Justin King.

“By donating £100m of sports equipment and experiences through our Active Kids programme, Sainsbury’s has been able to help thousands of organisations give children of all abilities the chance to be more active in their daily lives.

“Our goal is to leave a lasting legacy for promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for kids, especially in the lead-up to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.”

Around £40m of the cash was donated to causes in London and the southeast of England. Scotland picked up £2.4m of the funding, with Wales receiving £2.18m and £1.1m going to schools and other groups in Northern Ireland.
