Free nutrition course launched for primary teachers

Last week, the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) launched a new professional development platform for primary school teachers. The free online course comes in response to the results of research which showed teachers were getting little training in the area of nutrition, yet poor nutrition and an unhealthy lifestyle are being increasingly linked with academic performance.

Can exercise improve children’s learning?

The natural order of classrooms has always been for children to sit. Whether it involves talking, discussion, working in groups or just listening to teachers, most of the time children do this from the comfort of a chair. On average, most primary school children spend 70% of their classroom time sitting down. Outside the classroom the number of children walking to school has decreased and, at the same time, many more children are now spending longer staring at screens. A 2015 study found that children aged 5 to 16 now spend an average of six and half hours a day in front of a screen. This is compared with around three hours in 1995.

The iCoachKids Website Has Lift-Off

The interactive iCoachKids online platform has gone live. The site contains a vast number of resources and materials to help coaches plan and deliver great sessions and programmes. The main objective of the iCoachKids project is to tackle the lack of existing opportunities for youth coaches to be suitably trained and recognised across Europe. The project aims to overturn this situation through the development of open and innovative education and training resources and opportunities for youth coaches.
