Proposals made by Olympic double gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes for a national contest with the finals held in the London 2012 stadium have been backed by Shadow sport secretary Jeremy Hunt.
Mr Hunt promised a “revolution in school sport” if David Cameron wins the next general election. He told the Conservative Party conference he would end Labour’s “political correctness and health and safety madness”.
Mr Hunt said: “What sort of society is it that bans scouts from carrying penknives? “What sort of society is it that bans parents from taking pictures of their children on sports day?
“And, even worse, what sort of a society is it that brands 11 million parents as potential paedophiles by saying they have to go through a CRB check before they can even give a lift to their children’s friends?
“You won’t stop child abuse by doing that but you will stop thousands and thousands of after-school sports clubs and a Conservative government will not allow that to happen.”
Mr Hunt welcomed Dame Kelly’s ideas about the Schools Olympics.
“We think it’s a great idea and under a Conservative Government it will happen.”
