Water safety group’s call to reduce drowning

A national drowning prevention strategy that aims to halve the number of fatal incidents on or near water has been launched by Transport Minister Robert Goodwill MP.

The document, created by members of the National Water Safety Forum (NWSF) is the UK’s first drowning prevention strategy, created in response to the World Health Organization’s report on global drowning, which recommended that every nation should have a drowning prevention strategy.

About 400 people drown in our waters in the UK every year; that equates to one accidental drowning every 20 hours.

England’s sports participation numbers fall

The number of people engaged in regular physical activity in England fell 1.4 per cent between October 2014 to March 2015, with swimming and fitness being the major casualties.

The latest figures from Sport England’s Active People Survey show the number of people doing “some kind of sport once a week, every week” fell to 15.5 million – 222,000 fewer than six months ago.

Despite being the most popular participation sport in England – with more than 2.5 million adults taking part in 30 minutes of moderate intensity swimming at least once a week – swimming was once again the standout casualty.

Exercise in water for fitness or rehabilitation

Exercising in water is particularly effective because it offers a wide range of therapeutic and health benefits without the hard impact of land exercise.

Water Exercise, a new book by Human Kinetics, demonstrates how water workouts can be highly personalised by changing the speed, intensity or amount of rest, based on an individual’s needs in light of their current fitness level.

It’s ideal for cross-training workouts, simple to advanced fitness workouts and especially as an aid to recovery from injury or management of chronic conditions.

Teaching swimming by ability rather than age

Assessments and Activities for Teaching SwimmingSwimming is a widely popular sport and activity with great health-related fitness benefits.

However a significant percentage of children are unable to swim with any degree of skill, meaning not only are they missing out on the health benefits, but they also are at risk when in the water.

Part of that risk comes from receiving either no instruction or no differentiated instruction.

Children receiving swimming lessons are commonly grouped by age but many lack the basic skills required for their age level.

Assessments and Activities for Teaching Swimming solves this problem by offering differentiated instruction for every participant in any class or programme, based on each participant’s aquatic developmental level.
